Bigfoot Encounters Too Dark for the Channel

Twelve stories I couldn’t put on the channel. Too long for a video, too dark for late-night listening, and a few that end where nobody should be left at two in the morning.

Why this book exists

The stories I couldn’t tell on the channel

Our videos have a shape. A witness, a long night, something in the trees, and most of the time an ending you can sleep after.

These twelve don’t have that shape. Each one runs about 5,000 words, the length of a night you can’t walk away from. The thing in the woods doesn’t turn out to be misunderstood. Sometimes the worst thing in the file is a person. And some of them simply end where they end, with nobody coming to explain it.

So they stayed off YouTube. Every one of them is in this book instead.

Too long

A survey crew nine days from the next floatplane doesn’t fall apart in twenty minutes. The slow part is the story.

Too dark

Menace that stays menace. Institutions that look away. People who use the monster as cover.

No easy endings

No rescue in the last minute, no twist that makes it all right. Just what happened, and who didn’t come home.

A word from the collector

A word from Cole

I’ve been telling bigfoot stories on our channels for a long time now. Most of them fit the format: twenty or thirty minutes, one witness, one bad night, and something out past the tree line that turns out to be more careful than cruel.

These twelve never fit.

Some of them run longer than anyone would sit through in one video. Some go darker than I’m willing to put in front of a channel where a lot of you fall asleep to us. And a few end in places I couldn’t leave a listener at two in the morning with nobody to talk to.

So I wrote them for the page, where you can set the book down when you need to and pick it back up when you’re ready.

I’ll be straight with you about what they are. They’re dramatized fiction, written in the old tradition of the encounter stories people tell around a fire. The witnesses are invented. The places are real regions you could drive to, from the Interior of Alaska to the Florida Panhandle, and I think that’s part of why they work.

Cole Marrick is the name I write under. Read them with the lights on, at least the first time.

The Post Map

We had nineteen scarecrows on posts along the hayride trail, and on the second Friday in October of 2016, my tractor driver counted twenty.

Delbert Sayre counted everything. He counted hay bales when he stacked them and riders when they climbed onto the wagon, and he counted fence posts out loud as we passed them, the way other men hum. So when he stopped the tractor at the bottom of the hollow on the 10:40 Blackout Ride and said “Twenty” into the dark, I thought he had miscounted for the first time in eleven years.

“Nineteen, Del,” I said.

“Twenty,” he said. “That last one’s not on a post. It’s standing on the ground.”

My name is Joanie Teets. That fall I was forty-nine and running my late father’s haunted hayride on our farm in the hills of southeastern Ohio, because the bank note on the farm came due on the first of November, and the hayride was the only thing we owned that made money in a hurry. Four weekends. Fourteen paid scare actors. A wagon of thirty riders every twenty minutes from dusk to midnight, and after ten o’clock the Blackout Ride: adults only, lights off, and a walk on foot through the back corn.

I had drawn the trail myself on a sheet of poster board that hung in the ticket shed, every post a red dot with a number beside it, one through nineteen. My actors signed in on a clipboard under that map every night, fourteen names and fourteen signatures, and I checked them off myself because I paid them in cash.

Behind us, thirty grown people sat on hay bales in the dark and laughed, waiting for something to jump out at them. I stood up on the hitch and put my flashlight on the corn where Delbert was pointing.

It was taller than the posts. I told myself it was one of my actors standing on a bucket for the scare. Then the wind came down the hollow and I smelled it, and it was not wet hay and it was not diesel. It was the smell of something that had lain in a ditch for a week.

“Now that’s a good one,” a man on the back bale called out.

I counted my actors in my head, the way Delbert would have. Fourteen signed in. Fourteen at their marks. I knew where every one of them was standing.

File 01 continues for about 5,000 words. Eleven more files follow.
